How is dental implant surgery performed?

Dental implants surgery is a two steps process:

Step I

The dentist uses a metallic root implant to replace the root of the missing tooth. When the jaw heals, the bone grows around the implant and anchors it securely in the jaw.

A small connector, called abutment, is then attached to the post to securely hold the new tooth.

Step II

The implant screws are replaced with a protective cap that sits on the gum. Regular abutments are later on used to replace the healing caps. Your denture, bridge, or crown is then attached onto the abutments.

A second trip is required 3-6 months after placement of the crown unless you are opting for single-trip dental implants—discuss with your dentist to see what works best for you.

The cost of dental implants in Thailand starts from around $1,800. The cost depends upon the kind of implant used and the amount work required before placing the implant.

Surgery duration

Dental implant surgery is done under local anesthesia and takes anywhere between 30 minutes to 2 hours.

What is the Success Rate?

Dental implants are reported to have 98% success rate, in a study published by the American Association of Endodontists.

It is an outpatient procedure and you will be allowed to return to your hotel immediately after placement of the implants.

However, you will have to strictly follow your dentist’s instructions (atleast for the next six months) to ensure proper integration and avoid implant failure.

Is it safe?

Though minimal, there are some risks associated with the dental implant procedure.

Risks include surgical infection, failure of the root implant to fuse to the bone, nerve damage and damage to any surrounding teeth, sinus damage and loss of the jaw bone.

You must always go with an experienced dental implant surgeon. Also, be honest about your medical conditions, and have all your doubts clarified before proceeding.

Dental implant dentures—Aftercare

Swelling, bruising, and some pain is common after surgery and the doctor will offer some pain killers for it
If there are chances of infection, antibiotics will be prescribed
Avoid very hot food, hard solid foods while the gum is healing
Do not smoke
Do not use a straw shortly after surgery
Maintain excellent oral hygiene after your surgery
